Who is Birce Akalay?
Early life and education
Birce Akalay was born on June 19, 1984, in Istanbul, Turkey. She began studying ballet at the age of four, but an injury at age sixteen prevented her from continuing in that discipline. She graduated from the theatre department of Pera Fine Arts High School in 2003.
After high school, she enrolled at Istanbul University to study theatre analysis. She left that program during her third year to focus on professional acting. She later attended Haliç University Conservatory to complete her formal theatre studies. As of 2020, she has served as a lecturer at Haliç University, where she teaches acting courses.
Television and film career
She started her career in 2004 by competing in the Miss Turkey pageant, where she placed third, followed by representing her country in Miss Europe. Her first television appearance came in 2007 with a supporting role in the series Asi. During that same year, she made her film debut in Son Ders: Aşk ve Üniversite.
Her breakthrough occurred in 2010 with the series Yer Gök Aşk, where she played the character Havva. This role brought her significant attention from fans and critics. She later starred in the 2013 historical series Ben Onu Çok Sevdim, portraying the figure Ayhan Aydan. Between 2014 and 2015, she appeared in the child-focused series Küçük Ağa.
Stage and other projects
Outside of television, she has maintained an active career in theatre. She appeared in the play 7 Kocalı Hürmüz, which was directed by Müjdat Gezen. In 2020, she also took on the leading role of Zilha in the well-known play Keşanlı Ali Destanı.
Beyond acting, she has experience as a television presenter. She worked for approximately five years anchoring sports programs on national television in Turkey. She also served as a chief judge on the music program Benimle Söyle.
Personal life
Birce Akalay has been married to Murat Ünalmış and Sarp Levendoğlu. She has also worked with Sarp Levendoğlu on the series Küçük Ağa. Her cousin is the actor Barış Murat Yağcı. She stands 178 centimeters tall.
