Who is Chanathip Songkrasin?
Early life and background
Chanathip Songkrasin was born in the riverside market town of Sam Phran. This community is located in the Nakhon Pathom Province, which sits west of Bangkok. His father, Gongphop Songkrasin, served as his first trainer during his developmental years.
His father originally intended to train him using a style inspired by Diego Maradona. This early instruction helped shape the technical abilities he displays on the pitch today.
Club career highlights
Chanathip began his professional path with BEC Tero Sasana, where he earned the TPL Young Player of the Year award in 2013. He later moved to Muangthong United, helping the club secure both the 2016 Thai League and the 2016 Thai League Cup titles.
His move to Japan saw him join Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo in 2017. He became the first Thai player to compete in the top tier of the Japanese football league system. While playing in the J1 League, he was named the most valuable player for his team in 2018 and earned a spot in the J.League team of the season.
International success
The Thailand national team has relied on Chanathip Songkrasin for many years. He was part of the squad that won the 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup, where he was named the tournament's best player. He repeated this achievement by winning the most valuable player award during the 2016 AFF Championship.
He also earned the MVP title for a third time during the 2020 AFF Championship while serving as the national team captain. In 2024, he captained the squad during the King's Cup, scoring a goal in the final against Syria to help Thailand secure their 16th title.
