Who is Charlie Heaton?
Early life
Charlie Ross Heaton was born in Leeds on February 6, 1994, and was raised by his mother on a council estate in Bridlington. He has an older sister named Levi who works as an actress and performs as a musician.
In 2010, at the age of 16, Charlie Heaton relocated to London. Around this time, he became an avid supporter of the Arsenal football club after moving to the city.
Musical beginnings
Before pursuing acting professionally, Charlie Heaton worked as a drummer in several rock bands. He played drums for the noise rock band Comanechi, where his tenure included touring for 18 months, releasing an album in 2013, and supporting The Gossip.
Following his time with Comanechi, he joined the psychedelic rock band Half Loon. He also earned money by working as a bartender, appearing as an extra, and taking on other commercial work to supplement his income.
Acting career
Without any formal acting training, Charlie Heaton landed guest roles on British television dramas in 2015. He appeared in the crime drama series DCI Banks and Vera, as well as the medical drama series Casualty.
That same year, he secured his breakthrough role as Jonathan Byers in the Netflix science fiction series Stranger Things. His feature film debut occurred in the thriller film Shut In, which was filmed just before he was cast in the Netflix series.
His subsequent film roles include Marrowbone in 2017, the superhero film The New Mutants in 2020, and independent projects like No Future and The Souvenir Part II in 2021. In 2025, he starred in the drama film Billy Knight, and he was later announced for a role in an upcoming Peaky Blinders sequel series.
Personal life
Charlie Heaton shares a son born in 2014 with Japanese musician Akiko Matsuura, who was his bandmate at the time. Since 2016, he has been in a relationship with American actress Natalia Dyer, whom he met while working together on Stranger Things.
In October 2017, he was detained at Los Angeles International Airport for possession of small amounts of cocaine, though he was not charged with a crime and was sent back to England before later returning to the United States for work.
