Early life and real name
Daniela Mercury Mercuri de Almeida was born on July 28, 1965, in Salvador, Brazil. She grew up in a middle-class household in the Brotas neighborhood with her siblings Tom, Cristiana, Vânia, and Marcos. Her parents are Liliana Mercuri and António Fernando de Abreu Ferreira de Almeida.
At an early age, Daniela began taking dance lessons, focusing on classical ballet, jazz, and African dances. By age 13, she decided to become a singer, drawing inspiration from the work of Elis Regina and performing bossa nova as well as music by Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Chico Buarque.
How Daniela became famous
Daniela started singing in local bars and made her trio elétrico debut during the carnival. She worked as the lead singer for Cheiro de Amor and later as a backup singer for Gilberto Gil before joining the band Companhia Clic.
In 1991, she released her self-titled debut solo album, which featured the number-one hit song "Swing da Cor" with Olodum. Her breakthrough came with her second solo album, O Canto da Cidade, which brought axé music to mainstream audiences across Brazil and generated several chart-topping singles.
