Melanie Adele Martinez was born on April 28, 1995, in Astoria, Queens. Her parents, Mery and Jose Martinez, are of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent. When she was four years old, her family relocated to Baldwin, New York, on Long Island.
During her childhood, she attended Plaza Elementary School. A teacher there named Mr. Nadien helped her develop her singing abilities. She also spent time practicing painting and photography while writing poetry starting in kindergarten.

In 2012, Melanie participated in the MSG's Varsity Talent Show where she performed songs by The Beatles and the Four Tops. Later that year, she auditioned for the third season of the American talent competition The Voice. She chose Adam Levine as her coach after several judges selected her.
During her time on the show, she performed tracks such as Lights and Seven Nation Army. Her performance of Seven Nation Army reached number 10 on the iTunes Top 200 Single Chart. She was eventually eliminated from the competition during the fifth week of live rounds.

After signing with Atlantic Records, she released the Dollhouse EP in May 2014. Her first studio album, Cry Baby, arrived in August 2015 and reached number 6 on the US Billboard 200. This project included platinum-certified songs such as Pity Party, Soap, and Play Date.
In 2019, she released her second studio album and soundtrack, K-12. This release included a musical film that she wrote and directed. The album reached number 3 on the Billboard 200 and topped the Top Alternative Albums and Top Soundtracks charts.
