Early life and career beginnings

Dante joined Juventude in Brazil in 2001 and became part of the first team setup the following year. In 2004, he moved to Europe to sign for Lille in France, where he featured in 12 league games over two seasons. Following his time in France, he moved to Belgium and signed for Charleroi in 2006. After a successful campaign with Charleroi that resulted in a fifth-place finish, he moved to Standard Liège.

During his debut season with Standard Liège, the club was crowned Belgian Pro League champions. He proved to be an integral member of the squad, missing just one league match during that title-winning campaign. In his second season with the club, he featured in the first 15 league matches before attracting interest from German clubs.

Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayern Munich

Dante joined German side Borussia Mönchengladbach on 27 December 2008. In May 2009, he scored a crucial goal on the final day of the season in a draw with Borussia Dortmund, which helped the club avoid immediate relegation. After battling injuries during the 2010 to 2011 campaign, he helped the club secure survival through the relegation play-offs against VfL Bochum. The following season, he featured in 38 matches in all competitions and helped the team reach the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal.

On 26 April 2012, Dante agreed to join Bayern Munich for an estimated transfer fee of 4.7 million euros. He made his DFL-Supercup appearance in August 2012, helping Bayern defeat Borussia Dortmund. With Dante at the heart of the defence during the treble-winning campaign, Bayern broke records for the fewest goals conceded and the most clean sheets in a Bundesliga season. In December 2013, he scored the opening goal as Bayern beat Raja Casablanca in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup.

Wolfsburg and Nice

On 30 August 2015, Dante moved to VfL Wolfsburg for an undisclosed transfer fee. He scored his first goal for Wolfsburg in January 2016 during a match against Eintracht Frankfurt. On 22 August 2016, he transferred to French Ligue 1 side Nice, signing a three-year contract and eventually becoming the captain of the squad.

On 8 February 2025, he made his 250th league appearance and 300th overall appearance for Nice. He signed a one-year extension keeping him at the club until the end of the 2025 to 2026 season. In February 2023, he became the oldest ever goalscorer for Nice at 39 years and 3 months. He later played in the UEFA Europa League and the Coupe de France final before retiring in May 2026 following a relegation play-off victory over Saint-Étienne.
