Early life and education
Elsa Pataky Lafuente Medianu was born in Madrid, Spain, on July 18, 1976. Her parents are José Francisco Lafuente, a Spanish biochemist, and Cristina Medianu Pataky, who worked as a publicist in Romania. Her grandmother came from the Transylvania region.
She attended the Universidad CEU San Pablo in her home country. During her studies, she focused on journalism classes and also took acting courses. She possesses language skills in Spanish, Romanian, English, Italian, Portuguese, and French.
Acting career and filmography
Elsa began her professional path as a member of the Teatro Cámara de Ángel Gutiérrez theatre company based in Madrid. She eventually left her university studies after securing a spot in the television drama Al salir de clase, which ran from 1997 to 2002. Her early work included appearances in the television series Queen of Swords as Señora Vera Hidalgo and the series Los Serrano as a teacher named Raquel.
She found international work in films such as Snakes on a Plane, Giallo, and Give 'Em Hell, Malone. She played the role of Officer Elena Neves in Fast Five, which started her tenure in the Fast and Furious series. She later reprised this character in the sixth, seventh, and eighth installments of that film franchise. In 2018, she starred as Adrielle Cuthbert in the Australian web series Tidelands, which Netflix released in December of that year. She also led the cast of the 2022 film Interceptor.
Personal life and family
Elsa was in a relationship with French actor Michaël Youn between 2004 and 2006. She later dated American actor Adrien Brody from 2006 to 2009. She began dating Australian actor Chris Hemsworth in early 2010. The couple married during the Christmas season of 2010. They share three children: a daughter named India Rose Hemsworth and twin sons named Tristan and Sasha.
In 2015, the family relocated from Los Angeles to Byron Bay, Australia. Aside from her acting career, she co-founded a skincare company called Purely Byron. The brand released its initial product in 2022, though the company faced administration proceedings in March 2023.
Legal ruling and modeling
In September 2012, the Supreme Court of Spain ruled in favor of Elsa regarding a legal dispute. She was awarded 310,000 euros against the publishing group Ediciones Zeta. The company owned Interviú magazine, which had published topless photos of her taken without consent during an Elle magazine photoshoot in 2007. In terms of her modeling work, she appeared on the cover of Maxim in August 2006 and served as the face of the Time Force jewelry line alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.
