Emilia Clarke Isobel Euphemia Rose Clarke was born on October 23, 1986, in London, United Kingdom. She grew up in Oxfordshire with her family. Her mother, Jennifer Susan Dodd Clarke, is a businesswoman and charity director, while her father worked as a theatre sound engineer. Her interest in acting began at the age of three after she saw a production of the musical Show Boat.
For her education, Emilia attended Rye St Antony School and St Edward's School in Oxford. After finishing school, she pursued formal acting training at the Drama Centre London, where she graduated in 2009. During her time at the drama school and high school, she took part in various student stage productions, including Twelfth Night and West Side Story.

Before finding mainstream success, Emilia appeared in student short films and television commercials.
