Early life and background
Gabriella Lucia Cilmi was born in the Melbourne suburb of Dandenong, Australia. She grew up within an Italian-Albanian family, often speaking Italian dialects at home. Her mother originated from Italy, and her parents, Paula and Joe, were both supportive of her early musical interests. She attended Sacred Heart Girls' College in Oakleigh during her youth.
As a teenager, she developed a deep interest in blues and rock music, citing influences such as Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, and Cat Stevens. She eventually sang with a band called Foucault, which performed covers of songs by artists like Jet and Silverchair. At the age of fifteen, she moved to London with her family to pursue her career.
Rise to musical fame
In 2004, Gabriella Cilmi caught the attention of Warner Music executive Michael Parisi after she performed a rendition of the Rolling Stones song Jumpin' Jack Flash at a community festival in Melbourne. Following this, she traveled to the United States and the United Kingdom with producer Adrian Hannan and eventually signed a contract with Island Records UK.
Her professional career began to gain momentum when her songs appeared on the soundtrack for the 2005 Australian film Hating Alison Ashley. That same year, she also supported artist Mutya Buena at a London venue.

Her debut studio album, Lessons to Be Learned, was released in March 2008. The record featured the hit single Sweet About Me, which topped the Australian ARIA Singles Chart and reached number six on the UK Singles Chart. Due to this success, she won six ARIA Music Awards in 2008, including categories for Best Female Artist and Single of the Year.
