Early life and background
Lisa Gerrard was born in Melbourne, Australia, on April 12, 1961, to Irish immigrant parents. She grew up in Prahran, an inner suburb with a substantial Greek population. The sound of Mediterranean music drifting from neighboring houses left a lasting impression on her, later influencing her musical style in Dead Can Dance and her solo projects.
During her youth in Melbourne, she became involved in the local Little Band scene, an experimental post-punk movement that lasted from 1978 until 1981. In this creative environment, she met Brendan Perry, with whom she would eventually form her most famous musical partnership. Before starting that group, she served as the lead vocalist for a post-punk group named Microfilm.
Dead Can Dance career
In 1981, Lisa Gerrard co-founded Dead Can Dance alongside Brendan Perry, bassist Paul Erikson, and drummer Simon Monroe in Melbourne. The group relocated to London the following year, though Monroe chose to remain in Australia. The band explored traditional and modern styles, helping to lay the foundations for neoclassical dark wave music.
The group released several albums on 4AD Records, beginning with their self-titled debut in 1984. Their records Spiritchaser and Anastasis both reached the top position on the Billboard Top World Music Albums Chart. After a period of inactivity and subsequent reunions, Gerrard officially departed from Dead Can Dance in 2022.
Solo work and film scores
Alongside her work with Dead Can Dance, Lisa Gerrard pursued an extensive solo and collaborative career. She released her first solo album, The Mirror Pool, in 1995 with the accompaniment of the Victorian Philharmonic Orchestra. She followed this with numerous collaborative projects, working with artists such as Pieter Bourke, Patrick Cassidy, and Klaus Schulze.
She also built a successful career in film composition. She collaborated with Hans Zimmer on the music score for the 2000 film Gladiator, which earned her a Golden Globe Award. Throughout her career, she has contributed to the scores of more than forty-eight films and received multiple international award nominations.
