Biography
Who is Sia?
Early life
Sia Kate Isobelle Furler was born on December 18, 1975, in Adelaide, South Australia. Her father, Phil Colson, worked as a guitarist, and her mother, Loene Furler, served as an art lecturer. She is the niece of actor Kevin Colson. As a child, she attended Adelaide High School and watched the Grammy Awards from a limousine after staying with family friend Colin Hay in New York City, which inspired her to pursue a music career. During her youth, she imitated the performing style of Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Sting.
In the mid-1990s, Sia began her professional career as a singer in the local acid jazz band Crisp. She contributed vocals to their album Word and the Deal and their EP Delirium. When the band disbanded in 1997, she launched her debut studio album, OnlySee, under her full name in Australia on December 23, 1997. The project sold about twelve hundred copies and was produced largely by Jesse Flavell.
Rise to fame
Following the breakup of Crisp, Sia relocated to London, where she performed as a background vocalist for Jamiroquai and provided vocals for the English downtempo group Zero 7. She contributed to their albums Simple Things and When It Falls, performing tracks such as Destiny and Somersault. In 2000, she signed a recording contract with DancePool and released the single Taken for Granted, which reached number ten on the UK Singles Chart. Her second solo album, Healing Is Difficult, followed in 2001.
Displeased with the promotion of her second album, Sia left Sony Music and signed with Go! Beat. She released her third studio album, Colour the Small One, in 2004, which featured the single Breathe Me. Dissatisfied with mainstream reception, she moved to New York City in 2005. Her fame in the United States increased after Breathe Me was featured in the final scene of the HBO television series Six Feet Under, prompting her manager to set up a US tour.
Career highlights
In 2008, Sia released her fourth studio album, Some People Have Real Problems, which peaked at number forty-one in Australia and became her first album to chart on the US Billboard 200. Her fifth studio album, We Are Born, arrived in 2010, peaking at number two on the ARIA Albums Chart and earning certification from the Australian Recording Industry Association. The album included singles such as You've Changed and Clap Your Hands.
Uncomfortable with growing fame and public attention, Sia briefly retired as a recording artist and focused on songwriting for other performers. She co-wrote major hits including Titanium with David Guetta, Diamonds for Rihanna, Wild Ones with Flo Rida and Pretty Hurts for Beyoncé. She later returned to solo releases with her sixth studio album, 1000 Forms of Fear, which debuted atop the US Billboard 200 and featured the top-ten single Chandelier.
