Who is Keith Richards?
Early life and education
Keith Richards was born at Livingston Hospital in Dartford, England. His father Bert worked in a factory and his mother was named Doris Dupree. His paternal grandparents were civic leaders and mayors in Essex. His maternal grandfather toured with a jazz big band and helped spark his interest in playing music. When he was a boy, he attended Wentworth Primary School where he first met Mick Jagger.
Forming the Rolling Stones
He met Jagger again while waiting for a train. They discovered a shared love for blues records from artists like Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry. This encounter led to them joining the amateur band Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys. Eventually, he connected with Brian Jones, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts, and Ian Stewart. The group signed with Decca Records in 1963.
Musical contributions and style
As a member of the Rolling Stones, he handles both lead and rhythm guitar duties. He is known for the technique called weaving, which involves detailed interplay between two guitars. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with bandmates Brian Jones, Mick Taylor, and Ronnie Wood. He is also a vocalist and has sung lead on tracks like Happy and Before They Make Me Run. Beyond his band work, he played with his side project called the X-Pensive Winos.
