Biography
Who is Uschi Obermaier?
Early life and career start
Uschi Obermaier was born in the Sendling district of Munich, Germany. She initially began an apprenticeship to become a photo-restorer. She left this career path behind to pursue modeling after magazine editors at Twen discovered her. A successful photo assignment in Cameroon with photographer Guido Mangold launched her career, making her a top model. She later collaborated with prominent photographers such as Helmut Newton.
The 1968 movement and communes
Around 1968 and 1969, Uschi was a member of the Munich experimental commune and band Amon Düül. She met Rainer Langhans at a concert, and their relationship led her to join the Berlin-based Kommune 1. This group was the first politically motivated commune in Germany.
The media frequently compared the couple to John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and they became central figures of the sexual revolution. Despite her association with student protests, she later stated she lacked a deep political interest and only moved to the commune to be with Langhans.
Travels and personal life
In 1973, Uschi began a relationship with Dieter Bockhorn, who owned a club in the Reeperbahn district of Hamburg. The two traveled the world in a customized bus for years, spending time in Asia, Mexico, and the United States. She clarified in 2006 that they did not have weddings in every country they visited but were married once in India. Their time together ended in 1983 when Bockhorn died in a motorcycle crash in Mexico.
During her travels, she also reportedly had romantic connections with music figures like Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Jimi Hendrix.
Acting and music career
Uschi Obermaier appeared in several films, including the 1969 movie Detectives with Iris Berben and the 1970 film Red Sun, where she played the protagonist. She also had a part in the film Haytabo alongside Rainer Langhans and appeared as Marlene Thompson in the 1997 movie Blutrausch.
Her music career included playing maracas on three albums by the band Amon Düül I: Psychedelic Underground, Collapsing, and Disaster. She also contributed vocals to the track Voices Of Where on a Michael Hoenig album.
Autobiography and later years
She co-authored her authorized biography titled High Times with Olaf Kraemer. The book achieved significant success, reaching the third spot on the best seller list. This work inspired the 2007 film Eight Miles High, which depicted her life. After moving to the United States and obtaining citizenship, Uschi lived in Topanga Canyon and worked as a jewelry designer. As of 2021, she resides on the Algarve coast in Portugal.
