Who is Jack Black?
Early life and real name
Thomas Jacob Black was born in Santa Monica, California, on August 28, 1969. His parents were satellite engineers Thomas William Black and Judith Love Cohen. He was raised in Hermosa Beach and attended Hebrew school, having a bar mitzvah. His parents divorced when he was ten years old.
For high school, Jack attended the Poseidon School and the Crossroads School, where he excelled in drama. He later enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles, but left during his second year to pursue a career in entertainment.
Career highlights
Jack Black began acting at age 13 with a television commercial appearance. Early film roles included Dead Man Walking in 1995, Mars Attacks! In 1996, and Enemy of the State in 1998. He gained widespread recognition for starring in the romantic comedy High Fidelity in 2000.
He established himself as a leading man by starring in the musical comedy School of Rock in 2003, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination. He later starred in King Kong in 2005, Tropic Thunder in 2008, and Bernie in 2011, receiving a second Golden Globe nomination for the latter. He also voiced Po in the Kung Fu Panda franchise and Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Music and Tenacious D
Outside of acting, Jack formed the comedy musical duo Tenacious D with long-time friend Kyle Gass in 1994. The musical group won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. They released projects such as Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, which he also wrote and produced.
Family and personal life
Jack Black is married to Tanya Haden, and the couple has two children named Samuel and Thomas. His mother worked on the Apollo lunar module guidance system and the Hubble Space Telescope. Since 2018, he has also managed a YouTube channel called Jablinski Games.
