Early life and real name
Shania Twain was born as Eilleen Regina Edwards in Windsor, Ontario, on August 28, 1965. Her parents were Sharon Morrison and Clarence Edwards, and she grew up with sisters alongside a large stepfamily after her mother married Jerry Twain. The family eventually settled in Timmins, Ontario, where she experienced a difficult childhood marked by financial struggle and family hardship.
To help pay household bills, Shania began singing in local bars at the age of eight. She attended Timmins High and Vocational School, where she sang for a local band named Longshot. During her youth, she also worked with her father's reforestation business in northern Ontario, spending time writing songs in the forest.
Rise to fame and career highlights
Shania released her self-titled debut studio album in 1993, which was a commercial failure upon release. She collaborated with producer Robert John Mutt Lange, and her career transformed with the release of her second studio album, The Woman in Me, in 1995. The record sold millions of copies worldwide and earned her a Grammy Award.
Her third studio album, Come On Over, arrived in 1997 and became the best-selling studio album by a female solo artist. It produced multiple hit singles, including You're Still the One and Man! I Feel Like a Woman!, earning her four additional Grammy Awards. Over the following decades, she released projects like Up! In 2002, Now in 2017, and Queen of Me in 2023, while also completing concert residencies in Las Vegas.
Family and personal life
Shania was previously married to producer Robert John Mutt Lange and later married Frédéric Thiébaud. Throughout her life, she maintained a strong connection to her upbringing and her indigenous heritage through her adoptive father Jerry Twain, holding status with the Temagami First Nation.
In 2004, she entered a hiatus after being diagnosed with Lyme disease and dysphonia, conditions that severely weakened her singing voice. She documented her vocal rehabilitation on a television miniseries and eventually returned to performing and recording music, publishing an autobiography titled From This Moment On.
