During his time as a student, he performed in several theatrical productions, including Three Sisters, A Respectable Wedding, and Severity's Mistress.
Stage name and career beginnings
At the age of 22, the actor chose the professional name James Roday. Producers and casting directors felt his appearance did not match his Latino family name for the roles available at the time. Years later, he announced he would return to using his full legal name, James Roday Rodriguez.
James made his big screen debut in the 1999 film Coming Soon alongside actors such as Ryan Reynolds and Ashton Kutcher. His early television credits include starring roles in First Years in 2001 and Miss Match in 2003. He also co-wrote the screenplay for the 2006 film Skinwalkers.
Psych and later projects

The show ran for eight successful seasons until 2014 and later spawned multiple television films, including Psych: The Movie, Psych 2: Lassie Come Home, and Psych 3: This Is Gus, which James co-wrote and executive produced.
Following the conclusion of Psych, James returned to network television in 2018 to star as Gary Mendez in the ABC dramedy series A Million Little Things, which broadcast for five seasons. He also expanded his work behind the camera, directing episodes for television shows such as The Resident, Rush Hour, and High Potential, and directing feature films including Gravy and Treehouse.
Theatre and personal life
Alongside his screen work, James has maintained an active career in theatre. In 1999, he co-founded the non-profit Los Angeles theatre company Red Dog Squadron with fellow university alumnus Brad Raider. He has produced, written, and directed numerous stage productions with the company and serves on the board of trustees at the Legacy Theatre in Connecticut.
