Early life and athletic background
Julie Benz was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on May 1, 1972. Her mother worked as a figure skater, while her father served as a surgeon in the city. The family relocated to Murrysville, Pennsylvania, when she was two years old.
Following in her family's footsteps, Julie began ice skating at age three. Her older siblings, Jeffrey and Jennifer, were accomplished junior ice dancing champions. However, her professional skating ambitions ended when she suffered a severe stress fracture in her right leg at age fourteen.
Education and acting beginnings
After her skating career concluded, Julie attended Franklin Regional High School. She graduated in 1990 and subsequently enrolled at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts to study acting. She moved to Los Angeles in 1993 shortly after finishing her degree to pursue screen work.
Her initial experience in the industry was difficult. A teacher once told her that she would never succeed as an actress due to her voice. She used this criticism as motivation. Her early roles included a small part in the film Two Evil Eyes and a recurring role on the television show Hi Honey, I'm Home!

In 1996, Julie auditioned for the lead in Buffy the Vampire Slayer but was cast as the vampire Darla instead. The role was initially small but expanded due to audience reception. She later reprised this character on the spin-off series Angel, appearing across multiple seasons.
Her profile grew significantly when she joined the cast of Dexter in 2006. She played Rita Bennett, the girlfriend and eventual wife of the title character.
