Early life and background
Karen Sheila Gillan was born in Inverness, United Kingdom, on November 28, 1987. Her parents are Marie and Raymond Gillan. She grew up with an interest in music and took piano lessons during her childhood. When she turned sixteen years old, she moved to Edinburgh and completed an acting course at Telford College.
At age eighteen, Karen relocated to London to study at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. While studying in London, a modelling agency scouted her. She worked as a professional model and walked at London Fashion Week in 2007. Although she enjoyed modelling, she ultimately preferred pursuing a career in acting.
