Who is Kevin McHale?
Early life and background
Kevin McHale was born in Plano, Texas, to parents Christopher McHale and Elizabeth Payne. He was the youngest of four children in the family. As a teenager, he relocated with his parents to California to pursue opportunities within the entertainment industry. He attended Academy of the Canyons High School, which is located in the Santa Clarita Valley of California.
His interest in acting began after he persuaded his older sister, who worked as a talent agent, to allow him to audition for a local commercial. During his youth, he grew up with singer and actor Demi Lovato. These early experiences in California helped shape his path toward a professional career in film and television.
Music career and NLT
Before his breakout acting role, Kevin McHale was a member of the four-piece boy band NLT, which stood for Not Like Them. The group was discovered by Chris Stokes in 2006 and signed to his record label, The Ultimate Group. In 2007, the band released their first single titled That Girl. They also opened for The Pussycat Dolls and appeared in the film Bratz: The Movie. The group eventually split in 2009 after member Travis Michael Garland announced the news.
Following his time in the band, he continued to pursue music independently. He released a solo album titled Boy in 2019. He has also released several pop songs, including Help Me Now and James Dean. Also, he competed on The X Factor: Celebrity in 2019, where he finished in seventh place. In 2021, he worked on a musical children's show called The AlphaBeatZ, where he provided the voice for the character Ross.
Acting roles and Glee
In 2009, Kevin McHale landed his most prominent role as Artie Abrams in the Fox musical comedy-drama series Glee. His character was a high school student who used a wheelchair following a car accident. Over the course of the series, he performed several solos and dance sequences. He was part of the main cast that won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series in 2010.
Prior to Glee, he made guest appearances on television shows such as The Office, where he played a pizza delivery boy, and the Nickelodeon series Zoey 101. He also appeared in two episodes of the HBO series True Blood. Later in his career, he appeared in the miniseries When We Rise, playing AIDS activist Bobbi Campbell. In 2021, he starred in the fourth episode of the anthology series American Horror Stories as a character named Barry.
Podcast and hosting work
Kevin McHale has been active in podcasting and hosting throughout his career. From 2014 to 2016, he hosted the British panel show Virtually Famous on E4. In 2014, he and Amber Riley hosted a radio show on Dash Radio called McRiley, and he later became a host on the show Sick of My Own Voice in 2015.
In 2019, he teamed up with Glee co-star Jenna Ushkowitz to launch a podcast called Showmance, where they recapped episodes of the show. The podcast was later rebranded in 2022 as And That's What You Really Missed on iHeartRadio. This project allowed them to share behind-the-scenes memories and reflections from their time on the musical series.
