Early life and education
Kim Delaney was born on November 29, 1961, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She grew up in a large family as the only daughter among five children born to Joan and Jack Delaney. Her father worked as a senior union official in the United Auto Workers, while her mother stayed at home as a homemaker. The family was raised in the Roman Catholic tradition.
During her school years, Kim attended J. W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School in her hometown. While still a student, she began working as a model for the Elite agency. After completing her high school education, she relocated to New York City to continue modeling work. Around the same time, she pursued acting training with William Esper.
Television and film career
Kim Delaney started her professional acting path on the soap opera All My Children. She played the character Jenny Gardner from August 1981 until August 1984, which earned her a Daytime Emmy Award nomination in 1983 and a dedicated group of fans. After leaving the soap opera, she transitioned into feature films during the mid-1980s.
Her early film appearances included the 1985 drama That Was Then... This Is Now alongside Emilio Estevez and the 1986 action movie The Delta Force starring Chuck Norris. She also appeared in television movies such as Christmas Comes to Willow Creek and secured a role during the second season of L.A. Law in 1987. In 1988, she joined the cast of the CBS series Tour of Duty before leaving the show the following year.

Kim Delaney has been married three times and divorced twice. Her first marriage was to actor Charles Grant in July 1984. She later married actor Joseph Cortese in 1989, with whom she had a son named Jack around 1990, before their divorce in 1994. She married James Morgan in October 2022.
Over the years, the actress faced well-documented struggles with alcoholism. In 2002, she was arrested in Malibu, California, for suspicion of drunk driving and subsequently received probation. She entered an alcohol rehabilitation center in 2003 after departing from the cast of CSI: Miami. In March 2025, she was arrested following a domestic dispute in connection with her husband, James Morgan.
