Early life and education
Born in Brooklyn, Michael Jai White Richard Jai White graduated from Central High School in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1982. He began training in martial arts at age seven, starting with Jujutsu. Over time, he mastered nine different styles, including Kyokushin Karate, Goju-Ryu, taekwondo, kobudō, Tang Soo Do, wushu, boxing, and kickboxing. He achieved seven legitimate black belts across disciplines like Shotokan and Goju-Ryu.
Before his acting career took off, he worked as a special education teacher for three years. This background shaped his views on how media impacts youth, particularly regarding hip-hop culture.
Acting and directing career
His breakthrough came in 1995 with the HBO biopic Tyson, where he played the lead role of boxer Mike Tyson. In 1997, he made history as the first African American to play a major comic book superhero in a feature film with his title role in Spawn. His filmography spans various genres, from action hits like Exit Wounds and Universal Soldier: The Return to ensemble dramas like the Tyler Perry movies Why Did I Get Married? And Why Did I Get Married Too?. He appeared as Gambol in the 2008 blockbuster The Dark Knight.
Michael later expanded his work into directing, helming projects such as Never Back Down 2: The Beatdown and the 2023 film Outlaw Johnny Black. He also wrote the scripts for Black Dynamite and 3 Bullets. In 2026, he starred as James Watkins in the martial arts drama Paper Made, filmed in Tampa, Florida.

He is a cousin to comedian and actress Kym Whitley. In 2015, Michael married actress Gillian Iliana Waters in Thailand. The couple has worked together on screen, appearing in the 2021 thriller Take Back, where Waters played the female lead. He has also shared his ambitions regarding film production, including a 2021 proposal to establish Jaigantic Studios in New Haven, Connecticut.
