Biography
Who is Michael Kiske?
Early life and career beginnings
Michael Kiske was born in Hamburg, Germany, on January 24, 1968. Before joining Helloween, he sang with the German band Ill Prophecy at the age of seventeen. The group recorded a demo tape, but it was never released commercially.
When he was eighteen years old, Michael was invited to join the power metal band Helloween. The group was originally fronted by singer and guitarist Kai Hansen, who needed to step away from sharing lead vocals and guitar duties. After initially turning down the first offer because he disliked the sound of their previous album, Michael accepted the second invitation and joined the group in late 1986.
Success with Helloween
Michael's first album with the band was the 1987 release Keeper of the Seven Keys: Part I. This record became a milestone in the creation of the power metal genre and is widely considered one of the group's best works. The follow-up album, Keeper of the Seven Keys: Part II, was released in 1988, went gold in Germany, and brought even greater international success.
The success of these records enabled the band to start on an extensive world tour and perform at famous festivals such as Monsters of Rock. Following internal tensions and commercial failures with later experimental albums, Michael left the group in 1993.
Solo work and other projects
In August 1996, Michael released his first solo album titled Instant Clarity, which featured guest appearances by musicians such as Adrian Smith and Kai Hansen. He later released other solo records, including Readiness to Sacrifice and a 2006 acoustic album titled Kiske.
He also formed the rock band SupaRed in 2003 and participated in various metal projects such as Avantasia, Place Vendome, and Kiske/Somerville. In addition to music, he wrote a book titled Kunst Und Materialismus, which was published in German.
Helloween reunion
In 2016, it was announced that Michael would return to Helloween alongside Kai Hansen for a reunion tour. The Pumpkins United World Tour began in October 2017 and became the biggest tour in the band's history, spanning multiple continents and leading to live album releases.
The reunited line-up later released new studio material, including a self-titled album in 2021 and the album Giants & Monsters in 2025.
