Who is Miranda Richardson?
Early life and education
Miranda Richardson Jane Richardson was born in Southport, Lancashire, in the United Kingdom. Growing up, she lived near a cinema and spent much of her childhood watching matinee westerns and historical dramas.
She attended Greenbank High School before joining the Southport Dramatic Club for early performances. Later, she enrolled at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School to study acting alongside other future performers.
Stage career
After finishing her training, Miranda joined the Manchester Library Theatre in 1979 as an assistant stage manager. She gained experience through various repertory theatre appearances before making her London West End debut in the 1981 play Moving at the Queen's Theatre.
She continued to perform on stage in London and received a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for her work in A Lie of the Mind. In 1996, she starred in a single-actor adaptation of Orlando at the Edinburgh Festival and later played the lead role in Grasses of a Thousand Colours at the Royal Court Theatre.
Film and television success
Miranda made her film debut in 1985 as Ruth Ellis in the biographical drama Dance with a Stranger. Around the same time, she played Queen Elizabeth I in the British television sitcom Blackadder II and later returned for several special episodes and related series.
Throughout her career, she took on well-known supporting and leading roles in films such as Empire of the Sun, The Crying Game, Damage, and Enchanted April, earning Academy Award and BAFTA nominations. She also appeared as Rita Skeeter in the Harry Potter film series and voiced Mrs Tweedy in the stop-motion animated film Chicken Run and its sequel.
Personal life
Away from her acting career, Miranda enjoys hobbies such as dog walking, gardening, and falconry. In 2013, she also began taking lessons to learn how to play the cello.
