Biography
Who is Morrissey?
Early life and education
Steven Patrick Morrissey was born on May 22, 1959, in Davyhulme, United Kingdom, to working-class Irish Catholic parents who had emigrated from Dublin. His early childhood took place in Old Trafford and Hulme, where his family lived in a council house before relocating to Stretford due to local slum clearances. As a child, he developed a strong interest in literature, kitchen sink realism, and 1960s pop music, which heavily influenced his later artistic style.
During his school years, Morrissey attended St Wilfred's Primary School and later St Mary's Secondary Modern School, an experience he found difficult and unpleasant. He continued his education at Trafford College, also known as Stretford Technical College, where he successfully earned O-Levels in English literature, sociology, and the General Paper before leaving formal education.
Rise with the Smiths
In 1982, Morrissey formed the rock band the Smiths alongside guitarist Johnny Marr. The group quickly attracted national recognition with their eponymous debut album, establishing a distinct sound characterized by alternative rock, jangle pop, and indie pop. As the band's frontman, Morrissey gained widespread attention for his witty and sardonic lyrics, distinctive baritone voice, and visual style that avoided traditional rock machismo.
The Smiths released three further studio albums during their active years: Meat Is Murder in 1985, The Queen Is Dead in 1986, and Strangeways, Here We Come in 1987. The band achieved a string of top twenty singles on the UK chart and built a dedicated cult following. However, personal differences between Morrissey and Marr led to the separation of the group in 1987.
Solo career and later work
Following the breakup of the Smiths, Morrissey launched his solo career with the 1988 album Viva Hate. He collaborated with co-writers such as Alain Whyte and Boz Boorer to produce subsequent records including Kill Uncle in 1991, Your Arsenal in 1992, and Vauxhall and I in 1994. These releases entered the top ten on the UK Albums Chart and generated multiple charting singles.
Over the following decades, Morrissey continued releasing music with albums like You Are the Quarry in 2004, Low in High School in 2017, and I Am Not a Dog on a Chain in 2020. He also expanded into writing, publishing his autobiography in 2013 and his debut novel, List of the Lost, in 2015. His work has earned him recognition, including MOJO Awards and being voted a major cultural icon in a BBC poll.
