Who is Naveen Andrews?
Early life and education
Naveen Andrews was born on January 17, 1969, in Lambeth, London. His parents were Nirmala and Stanley Andrews. Nirmala worked as a psychologist and Stanley was a businessman. Both parents came to the United Kingdom from Kerala, India. Naveen grew up within the Methodist Church of Great Britain. He attended Emanuel School for his early education. Later, he studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
Television career
Naveen gained significant recognition for his role as Sayid Jarrah in the show Lost from 2004 to 2010. This performance earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award with the rest of the cast. He also received nominations for a Primetime Emmy and a Golden Globe. Other television work includes playing Jonas in the series Sense8 between 2015 and 2017. He played Julian Cousins in the show Instinct from 2018 to 2019.
In 2022, he portrayed Sunny Balwani in the Hulu series The Dropout. He will voice Khan Noonien Singh in an audio drama for Star Trek.
Film and voice work
His movie career began with a part in London Kills Me in 1991. He appeared in the 1993 BBC production Buddha of Suburbia. In 1996, he played Kip Singh in The English Patient and appeared in Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love. Other film roles include parts in Mighty Joe Young, Rollerball, and Bride and Prejudice.
He also acted in Planet Terror, The Brave One, and Diana. In 2013, he played Jafar in Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. In 2014, Naveen provided the voice for Sabal in the game Far Cry 4.
Personal life and challenges
Naveen Andrews had a relationship with Geraldine Feakins from 1985 to 1991. They have a son named Jaisal who was born in 1992. He later dated actress Barbara Hershey starting in 1998. During a brief split in 2005, he had a son with Elena Eustache. He won sole legal and physical custody of this child on January 7, 2009. He and Hershey ended their relationship in 2010.
Naveen has been open about his past struggles with heroin and alcohol during the mid-1990s. He once collapsed on a set and required emergency medical care. Outside of acting, he enjoys singing and playing the guitar. He also practices tap dancing. He became a citizen of the United States on May 27, 2010.
