Who is Patrick Dempsey?
Early life
Patrick Dempsey Galen Dempsey was born on January 13, 1966, in Lewiston, Maine. He grew up in the nearby towns of Turner and Buckfield alongside his two older sisters. His mother, Amanda, worked as a school secretary, while his father, William, was employed as an insurance salesman. During his youth, Patrick attended Leavitt Area High School, Buckfield High School, and St. Dominic Regional High School. He dropped out during his senior year after becoming an actor and later earned a GED.
As a child, Patrick was diagnosed with dyslexia at age 12. He later shared that the condition taught him the value of persistence and hard work. In his youth, he also participated in juggling competitions. In 1981, he earned second place at the International Jugglers' Association Championship in the Juniors category, finishing just behind Anthony Gatto.
Acting career
At age 17, Patrick auditioned successfully for a stage production of Torch Song Trilogy, touring with the company in Philadelphia for four months. He followed this with a lead role in a tour of Brighton Beach Memoirs and appeared in regional stage productions. His first major feature film role came at age 21 in In the Mood (1987). He gained further attention starring in the teen comedy Can't Buy Me Love (1987) and Loverboy (1989).
Throughout the 1990s, Patrick appeared in various television and film projects. He played a supporting role in the crime film Mobsters (1991) and portrayed Detective Kincaid in Scream 3 (2000). He earned an Emmy nomination for his guest role as Aaron Brooks in the drama series Once & Again. In 2002, he played the fiancé of Reese Witherspoon's character in the romantic comedy Sweet Home Alabama.
Auto racing and personal life
Outside of acting, Patrick maintains a significant passion for auto racing and collects sports and vintage cars. He has competed in well-known endurance racing events, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Daytona sports car races, and the Baja 1000 desert race. He has been married to Jillian Fink.
