Although he left the program one semester before earning his degree, he eventually completed his studies at UCLA in June 2021.
Musical career and early hits
He began his professional songwriting career at seventeen. During the early 1960s, he focused on composing incidental music for television and writing songs for other artists. Records in 1966, the company released his self-titled debut album in 1968.
While his early records did not achieve big commercial sales, many other artists found success covering his music. Songs such as Mama Told Me Not to Come, I Think It's Going to Rain Today, and You Can Leave Your Hat On became well-known tracks. Randy Newman later earned his own chart hits with songs such as Short People in 1977 and I Love L.A. In 1983.
