Who is Robin Shou?
Early life and real name
Robin Shou was born in Hong Kong on July 17, 1960. His birth name is Shou Wan-por. He grew up speaking his native Chinese and later learned to speak English fluently. During his school years, he attended Palm Springs High School in California.
His interest in martial arts began while he was a university student. After watching a film starring Jet Li, he started practicing wushu. This training led him to work as a stuntman in Hong Kong before his acting career took off.
Martial arts championships
Before working extensively in film, Robin earned recognition as a competitive martial artist. He won several gold and silver medals at various competitions in China. In both 1982 and 1983, he earned the title of International Forms Champion.
He also competed in the United States and became a traditional forms Grand Champion in California. His martial arts background allowed him to perform his own stunts and action choreography in numerous motion pictures.
Career highlights and films
Robin appeared in approximately forty movies during his initial career in Hong Kong during the late 1980s and early 1990s. His projects from that period included Tiger Cage 2 and Fatal Termination. He made his American television debut in the 1990 film Forbidden Nights alongside actress Melissa Gilbert.
In 1994, he relocated to Los Angeles to star as Liu Kang in the 1995 film adaptation of Mortal Kombat. He returned to play the same character in the 1997 sequel Mortal Kombat Annihilation. His other well-known movie credits include Beverly Hills Ninja with Chris Farley, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, and the Death Race film series where he played the character 14K.
Behind the scenes work
In addition to his on-screen acting and stunt work, Robin contributed to other film productions behind the camera. He trained actress Milla Jovovich to prepare her for physical sequences in the movie Resident Evil. He worked across acting, writing, producing, and directing during his time in the film industry.
