Biography
Who is Rüştü Reçber?
Early life and beginnings
Born in Korkuteli, Turkey, Rüştü began his football path at Antalyaspor. He originally started as a forward before transitioning to the goalkeeper position. Early in his development, he had opportunities to join major Istanbul clubs but these did not materialize. He famously declined an offer from Galatasaray at seventeen because he was asked to play for the youth team.
Later, a potential transfer to Beşiktaş in 1993 was cancelled after he suffered serious injuries in a car accident. National team manager Fatih Terim identified his potential early, telling him in 1992 that he would become the greatest goalkeeper in the nation's history.
Fenerbahçe success
Rüştü joined Fenerbahçe in 1993, though he initially returned to Antalyaspor on loan. His major opportunity arrived in October 1994 when the primary goalkeeper Engin İpekoğlu sustained a foot injury. He seized this chance against Petrol Ofisi and secured his place in the squad.
Over his first tenure, he made 240 appearances for the club, eventually becoming team captain. He helped the side win the Süper Lig title twice during this period. He later returned to the club after his international stint, ultimately playing 294 games for Fenerbahçe, the second-highest total for a goalkeeper in club history.
European football
In July 2003, Rüştü moved to Spanish club Barcelona after a brief period of uncertainty regarding a move to Arsenal. His transition to La Liga proved difficult due to language barriers. Manager Frank Rijkaard initially selected Víctor Valdés for the opening matches because he lacked fluency in Spanish. He expressed frustration regarding this decision, noting his extensive professional history.
He made his debut on 15 October 2003 in a UEFA Cup match against MŠK Púchov. He finished his time in Spain with seven total appearances, including four league matches. He later returned to Turkey in 2004, initially on loan.
International career

He was a key figure during Turkey's historic run to the semi-finals at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where the team finished third. His performance during that tournament earned him a spot on the All-Star team.
He also played a vital role at UEFA Euro 2008. During the quarter-final match against Croatia, he saved a penalty from Mladen Petrić to help his team reach the semi-finals. He retired from international duty after a match against Finland in 2012.
Style and life
Known for his charismatic personality, Rüştü was a technically gifted goalkeeper with excellent positioning and strong reflexes. He was recognized by his long hair and the anti-glare paint he wore under his eyes. He was particularly skilled at saving penalties and clearing backpasses.
Off the field, he married Işıl Reçber in 1994, and the couple has two children. In March 2020, he was hospitalized after testing positive for COVID-19. He underwent isolation treatment and was discharged the following month. He remains a respected figure in Turkish sports history.
