Who is Sara Nuru?
Early life and background
Sara Nuru was born on August 19, 1989, in Erding, Germany. Her parents migrated to Germany from Ethiopia and hold Tigray and Amhara ethnic roots. Her mother, Mulu, follows the Christian faith, while her father, Hussein, is Muslim. She grew up with two sisters in her family.
In 1999, the family relocated to Munich. Growing up, she learned to speak four different languages. She is fluent in German and English, has knowledge of Arabic, and understands Amharic, which is the native language spoken by her parents.
Modeling career and television
While attending high school, a friend encouraged Sara to audition for the fourth season of Germany's Next Topmodel, which held casting sessions in Munich. She succeeded in the process and became a finalist. During the televised competition, she secured professional work for brands like Gillette and Sony Ericsson.
On May 21, 2009, judges named her the winner of the fourth cycle. She achieved distinction as the program's first winner of Ethiopian descent. Unlike previous winners of the show, she did not sign with IMG Models. Instead, she entered a contract with Heidi Klum GmbH, a company managed by Günther Klum.
Philanthropy and business ventures
In 2016, Sara Nuru launched her own business called nuruCoffee. This company focuses on fair trade practices within the coffee industry. She also established a non-profit organization named nuruWomen, which provides microcredits to support women living in Ethiopia.
Her commitment to social causes is extensive. Since 2012, she has served as an ambassador for the charity Menschen für Menschen, founded by Karlheinz Böhm, with a primary focus on aid projects in Ethiopia. She also collaborates with the advocacy group ONE to campaign for various humanitarian goals.
