Who is Taryn Manning?
Early life and background
Taryn Manning was born in Falls Church, Virginia. Her parents separated when she was quite young. She and her brother, Kellin, relocated to Tucson, Arizona. Their mother raised them there on a modest budget. Despite financial constraints, her mother encouraged her interests in dance, karate, and acting.
When she was twelve, the family moved to Encinitas, California. She received training at the Orange County School of the Arts. Her father died by suicide two years after the move to California. This period was formative for the future performer.
Acting career beginnings
She began her screen acting career in the late nineteen nineties. Her early credits include minor appearances on television programs such as The Practice, Get Real, Popular, and NYPD Blue. She also secured a guest role on Boston Public that was written specifically for her.
Her film debut occurred in the romantic drama Crazy/Beautiful. She soon appeared in Crossroads, acting alongside singer Britney Spears. She played the character Janeane in the film 8 Mile. Other early film credits include roles in Cold Mountain, A Lot Like Love, and White Oleander.
Film and television success
Her performance as Nola in the 2005 film Hustle and Flow served as a major turning point. Director Craig Brewer cast her after seeing her image in a photography book. She subsequently appeared in various films including Weirdsville, Jack and Jill vs. The World, and The Perfect Age of Rock and Roll.
Television audiences recognize her for playing Rita Cherry on Sons of Anarchy. She later portrayed Caroline Bishop in Five Good Years. She joined the cast of the Hawaii Five-0 reboot as the sister of the main character.
Music and business ventures
Taryn Manning established the band Boomkat alongside her brother Kellin in 2003. They signed with a major label before moving to DreamWorks Records. Their debut album, Boomkatalog.One, featured the successful single The Wreckoning, which topped the dance club charts. After a hiatus, the band released their second album, A Million Trillion Stars, in 2008.
She eventually pursued a solo music career. Her singles include Send Me Your Love and Gltchlfe, both of which reached the top of the dance charts. She released other tracks such as Turn It Up and Summer Ashes. Beyond music, she owns the independent label Little Vanilla Records. She previously co-owned a clothing line called Born Uniqorn.
