Biography
Who is Tim Finn?
Early life and education
Brian Timothy Finn arrived on June 25, 1952, in Te Awamutu, New Zealand. His parents were Richard and Mary, and he grew up with two sisters and a younger brother, Neil. The family lived in New Zealand throughout his childhood. When he turned 13, he began attending Sacred Heart College in Auckland. This was a Catholic boarding school that he entered on a scholarship.
By 1971, he started a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Auckland. During his time there, he spent considerable energy in a music practice room with friends who would later become his bandmates. These individuals included Mike Chunn, Robert Gillies, Philip Judd, and Noel Crombie. Eventually, his interest in music surpassed his academic commitments, and he left the university in 1972 to focus on his creative career.
The Split Enz era
Soon after leaving school, he and Phil Judd formed a group called Split Ends. They renamed the band Split Enz in 1975 before moving to Melbourne. Tim Finn served as a co-lead singer and songwriter for the group. He wrote or co-wrote several of the band's most recognizable tracks, such as I See Red, Dirty Creature, and Six Months in a Leaky Boat.
The group released nine studio albums between 1975 and 1984. Although he left the band early in 1984 to pursue his own projects, he returned briefly for a final tour later that same year. His time with this group established him as a major figure in the New Zealand music scene.
Solo career and collaborations
While he was still with Split Enz, he recorded his first solo album titled Escapade in 1983. This release achieved significant commercial success in Australia and New Zealand. It included hits like Fraction Too Much Friction and Made My Day. In 1989, he joined the band Crowded House, which his brother Neil had founded. He contributed to their third album, Woodface, co-writing songs such as Weather with You and Four Seasons in One Day.
He left Crowded House in 1991 but later rejoined his brother for the Finn Brothers project. Beyond these bands, he has composed scores for various films and musicals. In 2015, he wrote music for the opera Star Navigator and the musical Ladies in Black. He also collaborated with Phil Manzanera on the 2021 album Caught by the Heart.
