Early career in Switzerland
Tranquillo Barnetta began his professional football path with his hometown club, FC St. Gallen. He played his first season there during the 2002–2003 period, where he recorded 30 appearances and scored 5 goals.
His performances in Switzerland quickly attracted interest from clubs in Germany. In January 2004, he joined the German side Bayer Leverkusen. During his initial time with the team, he spent a period on loan at Hannover 96 before returning to his parent club in March 2005.
German and American club career
Tranquillo Barnetta became a regular player for Bayer Leverkusen following his performance at the World Cup. He played for the club through various seasons, including a well-known 2009–10 campaign where he helped the team maintain an unbeaten run during the first half of the season.
In July 2012, he signed a three-year contract with Schalke 04. While with Schalke, he spent the 2013–14 season on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt. He eventually moved to the United States in July 2015 to join the Philadelphia Union. During his time in the MLS, he made 45 appearances and scored 6 goals, helping the team reach the playoffs in 2016.
International football achievements
Tranquillo Barnetta represented the Swiss national team on many occasions, earning 75 caps. He was part of the Swiss U-17 squad that won the 2002 European Championships. At the senior level, he participated in three FIFA World Cups and two UEFA European Football Championships.
During the 2006 World Cup, he scored a goal in a group stage match against Togo. He was also recognized as a candidate for the Best Young Player award during that tournament. In international qualifying matches, he famously scored two free kicks in a single game against England in 2011.
