Born Sally Vanessa Marcil Ortiz in Indio, California, she was the youngest of four children. Her parents were Patricia Marcil, a herbalist, and Pete Ortiz, a contractor. She attended Indio High School before continuing her studies at the College of the Desert.

Vanessa started her professional path performing in various theatre productions. In 1992, she secured the role of Brenda Barrett on the daytime soap opera General Hospital.
