Vanessa Pulgarin Monsalve was born in Medellín, Colombia, on September 13, 1991. Her parents are Carlos Pulgarin and Dalila Monsalve Jiménez. She spent several years living in Sydney, Australia, where she worked in modeling and took part in various fashion shows and photo sessions.

Vanessa Pulgarin Monsalve built a long career in competitive pageantry over many years. In July 2016, she entered the Miss Antioquia pageant and secured the victory, which allowed her to advance to national competitions representing her department.
She later achieved national prominence by winning Miss International Colombia. This victory sent her to represent her homeland at the Miss International event held in Tokyo, Japan, in November 2017.
