Early life and real name
Virginie Ledoyen was born Virginie Vanessa Fernandez on November 15, 1976, in the tenth arrondissement of Paris, France. She grew up in Aubervilliers as the daughter of Olga, who worked as a restaurateur, and Bernard Fernandez, a merchant who sold cleaning products and knives. Her paternal grandfather was of Spanish descent.
She started working as a print model at the age of two. Later, she adopted the stage name Ledoyen, which came from the maiden name of her maternal grandmother, who had worked as a stage actress.
Career highlights
Virginie Ledoyen achieved her film breakthrough with the 1995 release A Single Girl, which earned her a nomination for a Cesar Award for Most Promising Actress. She had previously received two additional Cesar Award nominations for her work in Les marmottes in 1993 and L'eau froide in 1994.
Outside of France, she is best known internationally for her role in the 2000 film The Beach. During the fall of that same year, she signed a contract to serve as a spokesmodel for the cosmetics company L'oreal alongside Laetitia Casta and Noemie Lenoir. She also portrayed the character Cosette in a French television miniseries adaptation of Les Miserables released in 2000.
In 2013, Virginie Ledoyen served as a member of the official jury at the seventieth Venice International Film Festival. Her career honors include receiving the Prix Suzanne Bianchetti in 1998, along with recognition as an Officer of Arts and Letters and a European Film Award for Best Actress.
Family and relationships
Virginie Ledoyen gave birth to her first child, a daughter, on September 29, 2001. The father was production designer Louis Soubrier, whom she met while working on the set of La fille seule in 1995.
She entered a short-lived marriage with film director Iain Rogers that lasted from 2006 to 2007. Following that marriage, she was in a relationship with actor Arie Maleh from 2007 until 2015. Together, they have a son born in July 2010 and a daughter born in April 2014.
