Who is Yann Sommer?
Early life and career beginnings
Yann Sommer was born in Morges, Italy, and developed an interest in football during childhood. He played in the youth setups of Herrliberg and Concordia Basel before officially joining the Basel youth academy in 2003. He signed his first professional contract with Basel in 2005 and quickly became the first-choice goalkeeper for the under-21 squad. During this early developmental phase, he gained valuable first-team experience while on loan at Liechtensteiner club Vaduz, helping them secure promotion to the Swiss Super League.
After returning to Basel following a loan spell at Grasshoppers, Yann Sommer stepped up as the senior team's first-choice goalkeeper. He won the Swiss Super League on four consecutive occasions with Basel and claimed multiple domestic cup titles. His strong performances at the club level eventually earned him recognition across European competitions, paving the way for his eventual transfer to the German Bundesliga.
Club career in Germany
In March 2014, Yann Sommer signed a contract with Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach to replace Marc-André ter Stegen. During his first season with the club, Gladbach finished in third place in the Bundesliga, achieving their highest league finish since 1978. He established himself as a reliable shot-stopper and was named player of the season at the conclusion of his debut campaign. He remained with the club for over eight years, making numerous appearances in both the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League.
While playing for Borussia Mönchengladbach, Yann Sommer set a Bundesliga record by making 19 saves in a single match against Bayern Munich in August 2022. Following an injury to Manuel Neuer, Bayern Munich signed Yann Sommer in January 2023. He started the remaining fixtures of the season and successfully won a Bundesliga title with the Bavarian club before departing later that year.
Success in Italy and Belgium
In August 2023, Yann Sommer moved to Italian club Inter Milan on a permanent transfer. He secured his first silverware with the club by winning the Supercoppa Italiana in January 2024, keeping clean sheets in both the semi-final and the final. He ended that campaign by winning the national championship as Inter claimed their twentieth Scudetto, and he was subsequently named as the goalkeeper in the Serie A Team of the Year.
Yann Sommer continued his success with Inter Milan by reaching the UEFA Champions League final and securing the domestic double. After his tenure in Italy concluded, Yann Sommer joined Belgian side Club Brugge in July 2026 on a three-year contract, continuing his professional playing career in a new league.
International career
Yann Sommer represented Switzerland at various youth levels, including under-16, under-17, under-19 and under-21 teams. He made his senior debut for the Switzerland national team in 2012 and went on to become a crucial player for his country over the next decade. He represented Switzerland at the FIFA World Cup in 2014, 2018 and 2022.
In addition to his World Cup appearances, Yann Sommer played for Switzerland at the UEFA European Championship in 2016, 2020 and 2024. After over a decade of service as the primary goalkeeper for the national team, he announced his retirement from international play in August 2024.
