Childhood and early start
Alexander Ludwig Richard Ludwig was born on May 7, 1992, in Vancouver, British Columbia. He grew up with three younger siblings and a sister named Natalie. His mother, Sharlene, worked as an actress, while his father, Harald Horst Ludwig, was a businessman who co-chaired Lionsgate Entertainment. Alexander expressed a strong interest in performing from a young age, often citing his vivid imagination as a driving force.
Despite having a parent with industry experience, he had to convince his parents to let him pursue acting professionally. They were concerned about the impact of the industry on children and placed a high priority on his education. He attended Collingwood School and later enrolled at the University of Southern California to study in the School of Dramatic Arts. Alexander began his career at nine years old when he landed a spot in a commercial for Harry Potter toys. In 2007, he achieved a significant milestone by starring in the film The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising after completing a rigorous audition process that involved sixteen callbacks.
The actor gained further international recognition for his role as Cato in the 2012 blockbuster The Hunger Games. This part earned him an MTV Movie Award for Best Fight and a Teen Choice Award for Best Villain. Following this, he joined the main cast of the popular television series Vikings, where he portrayed Björn Ironside from 2014 until 2020.
