Who is Amy Smart?
Early life and education
Amy Smart was born on March 26, 1976, in Los Angeles. She grew up in the Topanga Canyon area. Her father, John Boden Smart, worked as a salesman, while her mother, Judy Lysle, was employed at a museum.
During her childhood, she studied ballet for ten years. She later attended Palisades Charter High School located in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles.
Modeling and film beginnings
Before her acting career took off, she worked as a model in Milan, Italy. It was during this time that she met Ali Larter. The two women eventually moved to Los Angeles to take acting classes together.
Amy Smart made her first appearance in a music video for The Lemonheads in 1993. Her film debut arrived in the 1997 horror anthology Campfire Tales, directed by Martin Kunert. She also appeared in the science fiction movie Starship Troopers, directed by Paul Verhoeven, where she played a copilot.
In 1999, she appeared in the film Varsity Blues alongside Larter. This role helped her gain widespread recognition. She also had a recurring part as Ruby on the TV show Felicity between 1999 and 2001.
Career highlights
Throughout the early 2000s, she starred in several popular projects. She played a lead role in the comedy Road Trip in 2000 and appeared in the ensemble film Rat Race in 2001. In 2004, she starred opposite Ashton Kutcher in the sci-fi drama The Butterfly Effect.
She also worked on the romantic comedy Just Friends in 2005, which featured Ryan Reynolds and Anna Faris. Other well-known film credits include the sports drama Peaceful Warrior and the action movie Crank. From 2011 to 2012, she appeared in the American version of Shameless as Jasmine Hollander.
More recently, Amy Smart portrayed Barbara Whitmore in the superhero series Stargirl on The CW from 2020 to 2022. She also appeared in Tyler Perry's 2014 comedy The Single Moms Club.
Family and personal life
Amy Smart married Carter Oosterhouse on September 10, 2011. The wedding took place in Traverse City, Michigan. Oosterhouse is known for his work on the HGTV channel.
In 2016, the couple welcomed a daughter through a surrogate. Amy Smart has shared that the family experienced many years of fertility struggles before this happened.
