Early life and background
Nina Kraljić was born in the town of Lipovljani, Croatia, on April 4, 1992. Growing up in a supportive family with her younger sister Tena, she developed a deep passion for music at a very young age. When she reached the age of fourteen, she made the significant decision to leave her family home in order to fully focus on developing her unique musical expression and vocal talents.
To hone her skills, she pursued formal education by studying opera at a dedicated music academy. In addition to her musical training, she also studied Croatian studies at the Faculty of Philosophy located in Rijeka, balancing her academic pursuits with her growing artistic ambitions.
Rise to fame on television
Her first major television appearance took place in 2009 when she participated in Supertalent, which is the Croatian version of the popular Got Talent franchise. She performed admirably throughout the stages of the contest and ultimately secured a respectable tenth place in the grand final.
Several years later, Nina Kraljić achieved a major breakthrough by competing in the inaugural season of The Voice, known locally as Najljepši glas Hrvatske. Guided by her mentor Jacques Houdek, she delivered memorable performances of songs such as Beneath Your Beautiful and traditional folk numbers. Her powerful vocal delivery resonated deeply with the public, helping her secure roughly one million votes in the final round to claim the championship title.
Eurovision and debut album
Following her victory on television, her career expanded rapidly on both domestic and international stages. In February 2016, the national broadcaster announced that she would represent Croatia at the Eurovision Song Contest held in Stockholm, Sweden. She performed the song Lighthouse, successfully leading her country to the grand final for the first time in seven years and finishing in twenty-third place overall.
During the same eventful year, she received the prestigious Porin award recognizing the best new act in Croatia. Building on this momentum, she released her debut studio album titled Samo on September 30, 2016. The record showed her growing abilities as a songwriter, featuring English tracks like Lullaby and Lay You Down, alongside collaborations with prominent local composers.
