Who is Severina?
Early life and background
Severina was born on April 21, 1972, in Split, SR Croatia, which was part of the former SFR Yugoslavia. Her parents were Ana, originally from Drniš, and Sever Vučković. She grew up with two older sisters named Zdenka and Marijana. Her uncle is Aljoša Vučković.
As a young girl, she developed a strong interest in music, dance, and acting. She began her singing path by joining the KUD Mozaik group, led by Lepa Smoje. It was here that she first performed on stage, taking on the role of Carmela in the musical Frane Štrapalo. After finishing elementary school, she attended the Josip Hatze High School of Music in Split but later left her formal education to pursue music professionally.
Rise to musical fame
Her professional path began in the late 1980s through local festivals. She won the Dječji prvi pljesak competition in 1982 in her hometown of Split with the song Moja Milena. In 1987, she won a Croatian amateur competition in Daruvar. By 1990, she moved to Zagreb and won the Demo X competition at Radio Zagreb, which secured her a recording deal. She released her first self-titled album that same year.
Collaborating with producer Zrinko Tutić in the early 1990s helped solidify her career. She released the album Dalmatinka in 1993, which featured the hit title track about her native region. Other early albums produced during this partnership included Trava zelena, Moja stvar, and Djevojka sa sela. The title track of Djevojka sa sela became particularly famous when it was adopted as an unofficial anthem by the Croatian national football team during the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

Throughout her career, she has released 12 studio albums. She has collaborated with many well-known regional artists, including Goran Bregović, Petar Grašo, and Željko Bebek. In 2006, she represented Croatia at the Eurovision Song Contest in Athens with the song Moja štikla, where she placed 12th. Beyond recording music, she has appeared in various films, television productions, and theater performances.
Her cultural impact in the region is significant. In 2006, the weekly magazine Nacional named her one of the 100 most influential Croats. She received the Zlatna ptica award for being the best-selling artist of the decade in Croatia. Also, she holds the distinction of being the only Croatian artist to surpass one billion views on her official YouTube channel. In 2015, she was the most searched person on Google in both Croatia and Slovenia.
