Who is Sarah Shahi?
Early life and real name
Sarah Shahi was born Aahoo Jahansouzshahi on January 10, 1980, in Euless, Texas. Her birth name, Aahoo, means gazelle in Persian. During her time in the second grade, she adopted the name Sarah after hearing the Starship song titled Sara, as she felt bullied by peers regarding her original name. Her mother is of Spanish and Iranian descent, while her father is from Iran. Her father worked at the American embassy in Iran and fled the country just before the Iranian Revolution in 1979.
Career beginnings
While working as an extra on the set of the film Dr. T and the Women, Sarah met director Robert Altman. He encouraged her to move to Hollywood to pursue a professional acting career. Following this advice, she relocated to Los Angeles and began securing roles in various television series, including Alias, Dawson's Creek, Reba, and Supernatural. In 2005, she joined the cast of the show The L Word, portraying the character Carmen de la Pica Morales. She remained on the show for two seasons before her character was written out.
Television and film success
Sarah Shahi starred as Kate Reed in the USA Network legal drama Fairly Legal, which aired from 2011 until 2012. Following this, she joined the cast of the CBS crime drama Person of Interest as Sameen Shaw, a role she held from 2012 to 2016. During this period, she also appeared in the 2012 action film Bullet to the Head, starring opposite Sylvester Stallone and Jason Momoa. She later starred in the 2018 series Reverie and played a recurring role in the show City on a Hill starting in 2019.
Personal life and activities
Sarah Shahi married actor Steve Howey in February 2009. The couple had three children together before filing for divorce in May 2020, which was finalized in January 2021. In 2021, she revealed she was in a relationship with Australian actor Adam Demos, whom she met while filming the series Sex/Life. Reports in April 2025 indicated that this relationship had ended. Outside of her acting work, Sarah studied karate in her youth and achieved a 1st dan black belt in Shorin-Ryu karate.
