Biography
Who is Simone Perrotta?
Early life and career beginnings
Simone Perrotta was born in Ashton-under-Lyne and grew up within the youth system of Reggina. He made his professional debut in Serie B in 1995. His early performances established him as a consistent fixture for the team. In 1998, Juventus signed him, but he found limited playing time due to the presence of highly experienced world-class players like Zinedine Zidane and Didier Deschamps. During his time in Turin, he appeared in the UEFA Intertoto Cup and made his Champions League debut.
He was later sent on loan to Bari in a co-ownership deal. He played for Bari for two seasons, securing a spot in their first team before the club acquired him outright in 2001. These formative years helped him gain the experience necessary for the top tier of Italian football.
Development at Chievo
Following Bari's relegation from Serie A, he joined Chievo for the 2001-02 season. This move proved crucial to his development. He became a mainstay in the midfield for a surprising, newly promoted squad that held first place at the winter break. Under manager Luigi Delneri, the team finished fifth in the league and qualified for the UEFA Cup.
He provided a winning assist in a well-known victory over Internazionale that season. He remained with Chievo for three seasons, earning a reputation as one of Italy's most consistent midfielders, before his performance levels eventually dipped during the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons as key teammates departed.
Success with Roma
In 2004, Roma signed him from Chievo. His first season with the capital club involved playing in a supporting defensive role, though the campaign was largely unsuccessful due to managerial changes and an early exit from the Champions League. His career trajectory shifted with the arrival of head coach Luciano Spalletti. Under a new 4-2-3-1 formation, Simone Perrotta moved into an advanced attacking central midfield role. This tactical change allowed him to rediscover his form and become a vital part of the squad.
He scored 13 goals in all competitions during the 2006-07 season, helping Roma win the Coppa Italia. He also claimed the 2007 Supercoppa Italiana. He signed multiple contract extensions with Roma, remaining with the club until his final season in 2013.
International career
Simone Perrotta represented Italy at both the youth and senior levels. He debuted for the under-21 team under Marco Tardelli and won the 2000 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship. His senior international debut occurred on November 20, 2002, in a match against Turkey. He played in UEFA Euro 2004, scoring against Bulgaria.
His most significant achievement came during the 2006 FIFA World Cup under Marcello Lippi. He started all seven games for the eventual champions, playing primarily as a left winger or defensive midfielder. He later appeared at UEFA Euro 2008 before retiring from international football in 2009 after earning 48 caps and scoring two goals.
