Who is Sonia Fergina Citra?
Early life and education
Sonia Fergina Citra was born in Tanjungpandan, located in the Bangka Belitung province of Indonesia. Her parents are Ken Prayoga and Fransiska Evelin Burtnor. She grew up as the youngest child among six siblings. Beyond her early life, she developed an interest in martial arts and practiced Muay Thai, taekwondo, and capoeira.
For her formal education, Sonia attended Bina Nusantara University in Jakarta. She successfully earned a bachelor's degree in English literature from this institution. She later pursued further studies by enrolling in a master's program for business management at the PPM School of Management.
Career and pageantry
Sonia began her modeling path in 2005 by participating in the Bangka Belitung Youth Model Faces selection. Before transitioning into the world of pageants, she worked as a Digital Marketing Manager for a national distribution firm based in Jakarta. Her primary motivation was to represent Indonesia on a global stage.
On March 9, 2018, she competed in the Puteri Indonesia 2018 pageant, representing the Bangka Belitung province. She emerged as the winner and was crowned by Bunga Jelitha. This victory allowed her to compete internationally at the Miss Universe 2018 event in Bangkok, Thailand. She reached the top 20 contestants during that competition, becoming the sixth Indonesian woman to achieve a semifinalist placement in the history of the event.
Social causes and advocacy
Sonia actively participates in charitable work through the organization Diberi Untuk Memberi. Her contributions include coordinating food distribution for earthquake victims and assisting with school renovations. She is also involved in environmental conservation efforts, such as coral reef adoption projects at Tanjung Kelayang Beach in Belitung.
Since receiving her national title, she has advocated for HIV awareness, breast cancer, and cervical cancer. She also worked with the National Cervical Cancer Coalition of Indonesia. Also, she collaborated with a local non-governmental organization called Nara Creative to produce a notebook. This project, titled BeDiverseBeTolerant, documented her personal experiences with bullying during her school years and emphasized her diverse family background.
